Diagonosis and treatment of Dry socket
Dry socket
Dry socket is also known as Alveolar osteitis/Alveolitis/Septic socket. It is an oral condition that can happen to adults after the extraction of the tooth. After the extraction, a blood clot forms to protect the blood vessels and nerve endings. But sometimes this blood clot formation does not occur due to some reason or It has been replaced and a dirty greenish socket is formed and this oral condition is called a dry socket.
Diagnosis of Dry socket
We can diagnose Dry sockets very easily. As a Dry socket occurs after tooth extraction after the occurrence of Dry socket, the patient will experience severe pain at the side of extraction for three to four days. The pain will radiate towards the ipsilateral ear or temporal region of the eye. Probing of the socket reveals an empty, exposed, and sensitive socket. This empty socket may be hindered by some overlying inflammation tissues or partial retention of blood clots. Other symptoms can be a foul odor and bad breath.
Management of Dry socket
Sutures must be removed
Radiograph to rule out the possibility of retained tooth fragment or foreign body
Irrigate the socket
usually normal saline or local anesthetic which helps to get rid of any debris in the socket ot it helps to heal also increases some bleeding and helps to make a fresh clot, so irrigate for three to five days.
Sedative dressing
such as Alvogyl
it helps to relieve the patients' pain, and it also helps to make the base of the clot form
Post-op instructions
Patients must follow the proper post-op advice such as the patient must not rinse and must not spit out so that they will stay there and work together to lodge clots there.
If a patient has an infection along with the dry socket, you need to prescribe an antibiotic and analgesic for pain.
Avoid smoking for 3-4 days, because smoking encourages the dry socket and not to heal soon.
Avoid spicy food, sugars, and sweets as more as possible
Always bite and chew the food from the opposite side of the surgical extraction
Drink more and more water
Eat soft foods
